BETRAYING THE MARTYRS

thesoundsofearth:

I got a chance to interview  Baptiste Vigier of Betraying The Martyrs and Black Curtains. I am also proud and thankful to say that Baptiste is my very first interview.
Betraying The Martyrs, is a six piece “Symphonical and Amtospherical Groovy melodic Deathcore” band hailing out of Paris, France. Armed with a brand new singer and guitarist they are set to release their debut album Breathe In Life  September of this year.  If you haven’t checked out both Betraying The Martyrs and Black Curtains you are missing out on two bands that are going to be hard hitters in the next couple of years.
If you haven’t picked up their Ep The Hurt, The Divine, The Light I strongly suggest you do then go pick up their debut album Breathe In Life when it drops September 19th 2011
1)It appears that your guitar tone in the songs that have been released so far from Breathe in life have been polished out to have have a more crushing and clean tone in comparison to what we heard in your debut Ep (The hurt, The Divine, The Light). What amps and guitars did you use for breathe in life?
You’re right :) For Breathe in Life, we used both engls and 51/50 as guitar head amps instead of the VHT we used during the recording of our EP! We also used our brand new Schecter Blackjack 7 strings for this one, which are tuned in DROP A instead of 6 strings drop B before! 2)Do you think you have improved as a guitar player since your debut to Breathe Life? If so is there any guitarist or band(s) that have influenced your playing? Yes! i’m not going to lie, we worked very much on our guitar skills for Breathe in Life, and i think you can easily feel the progression we’ve made, both Lucas and me! i’ve been influenced by bands like Born Of Osiris, After The Burial, Structures, Volumes, Sentinel and guitarist such as Tosin Abasi. they’re incredible bands and musicians and you should check them out if you don’t know them!3)You are also the guitarist for Black Curtains, while the sound is not the same as Betraying the Martyrs, both bands have similarities, how does the writing process for both bands differ? You’re right! and that’s an interesting question: well, in Black Curtains it’s more about Lucas and me riffing together, finding ideas (of course with the others), playing the new stuff LIVE a lot, during rehearsals etc… In Betraying The Martyrs, it’s less spontanious: we’re working A LOT on the software Guitar Pro, which allows us to change the structures of the songs a lot more, working on something… then changing it.. then testing different ideas etc. I think that’s the main part of why the bands differ in the process of writing. In BC i work a lot with Lucas and Regan, while with BTM i play and jamm a lot more with Victor Guillet (synths/vocals)Moreover, within Black Curtains, we all have our influences but we’re 4… in BTM we’re 6 and we want to hear everyone’s point of view! everyone brings his own style and riffs, that’s why you can hear a lot of different things!4)You are endorsed by Schecter guitars, How did that come about?Yes, i’ve got the chance to be endorsed by Schecter, it’s been more than 2 years now and i’m really happy with their guitars. it came pretty simply, i didn’t have enough money to buy a new guitar at that time so I contacted them, telling them what were the plans for both of my bands and why they should endorse ME… they really liked how motivated i was, i guess ! 5)On the debut Betraying The Martyrs album what guitars did you use? Is there any 7 or 8 string guitar work or is it all 6 strings? We used only 7 strings :) both Blackjack with passiv Seymour Ducan. i’ve got the brand new model, while Lucas has the old one, but it’s basically the same guitar (except that i’m left handed haha)! Valentin also had to use his 5 strings bass on this one ;)6)Labeling band genres have been a big trend recently in music, on the Betraying The Martyrs Last.Fm you guys are labeled as Deathcore, what is your reaction to this? You’re right, and i’m not a big fan of labeling bands but i’m not going to be offended if we’re labeled as “Deathcore”. it’s true we have some heavy breakdowns, crushing moshparts, ultra fast blast-beats etc !!! if you want to be more precise and amazingly trendy, you could call us: “Symphonical and Amtospherical Groovy melodic Deathcore” it would define more our music…but i like to call our genre… “Metal” haha, way more simple and efficient !7) What are some bands that have influenced you through out the years and some bands that you are into right now? i’ve started listening to metal with Korn and Slipknot, then i was A LOT influenced by Metallica. Now i’m listening to A LOT of different genres, but if we want to stay in the “metal” area, i’d say Born Of Osiris, Bring Me the Horizon and As I Lay Dying ! More recently i’ve discovered bands like Structures, The Arusha Accord, Animals as Leaders and Our Last Night, which are pretty awesome ;p8)A lot of people in heavy bands seem to listen to a lot of other genres of music rather then their own,  Do you listen to heavy music mostly or is it varied? If so what are some bands or musicians you listen to that are not in metal That is totally true! i listen to a lot of different genres:Some ELECTRO like Sebastian or Toxic Avenger, some DUBSTEP, with artists like Excision, Borgore, Nero. Some “ROCK”: like Foals, an indie amazing band, Queens of the Stone age or the last Linkin Park. ACOUSTIC stuff like City and Colour or Bon Iver,Even some “pop” stuff like Katy Perry or Metro Station haha it’s really relaxing when you’re on tour, listening to some really heavy bands all day long !!!9)It seems that in general touring is a glorified aspect of being part of a band, although it seems that it often also leads to members quitting. Do you have any stories from the road that doesn’t glorify touring and stories that really make you love touring. You’re totally right it has some good AND some bad moments! Let’s start with a bad one: We were stuck at the Ukranian Border for more than 9 hours, impossible to eat, drink, or even going to the toilets, and we had an important fest to play the same very night… we were all losing our minds and it was really hard to all (9 boys) stay in the same small van in this situation, far from everything we love and know, far from…EVERYTHING! But fortunately they’re also some incredibly cool moments spent together, that will unify and link us for the rest of our lives! Like the first tattoo ever we all had at the same place, or some incredible shows like the Gates of Grace in Switzerland or the show AND the aftershow in Kiev during the last tour! 10)The scene in europe has been blowing up more then ever lately, with bands like The Bridal Procession, As They Burn and Promethee and Betraying The Martyrs just to name a few, Even though you guys are friends with most of those bands, is there a sense of competition between you guys? or friendly rivalry or even non friendly! Now that we’re (almost) all signed i must say that the tensions and rivalry are really lower than before, of course there was some kind of race between all those bands, WHO’s going to get signed first etc, who’s the bigger blabla… Nowadays we’re all more or less friends and i’m really glad to tour with ATB and TBP in October, it’s going to be so much fun! I’d love to play with Promethee again, they’re sick musicians and funny as **** ! :pI really hate the fact that people are talking about the others on their backs etc… we’re a small scene, we kinda have the same audience, and it’s already hard enough to play some METAL in France, so let’s team up, let’s join forces, and… let’s tour together !!!11)Betraying The Martyrs is definitely one of the better known bands from the bands from Europe that are blowing up. Apart from the music you guys play, How much has Media helped the band? If lets say we didn’t have internet do you guys think promoting yourselves would be harder? First of all, thank you very much! We don’t consider ourselves so “big” and we try to stay down to earth as much as possible. Stay humble is really important for me. To answer this, i’d say that the internet REALLY REALLY helped us A LOT. it’s a useful tool when it’s well exploited and helps and will help a lot of bands. But i’m confident enough to say that… if we didnt had internet… we would have found another way to promote ourselves ;) Motivation is definitely the key word of this band.. i don’t know.. we would have covered Paris and the whole FRANCE with posters and stickers if it was needed! :p 12)Like my self, everybody seems to be in a band and trying to make it big and tour around the world, what is your advice for a band coming up in europe? Here are my advices: be EXTREMELY motivated, and STAY THIS WAY, practice A LOT (at the beggining of the 2 bands, we were rehearsing 5 nights/week with BTM and the 2 other nights with Black Curtains…)Try also to TOUR as much as possible…it helps to spread the word a lot. At the beggining, nobody wanted to book us… then WE BOOKED OUR OWN SHOWS, Organize your own tours! that’s what we’re doing right now! We planned everything by ourselves and even went to Russia ! We did more than 19.600km in 30 days, and we weren’t helped by any big booking agencies :)13)Lastly, I know bands have millions of sponsors from clothing brands, string companies, guitar companies and so forth but Betraying The Martyrs are sponsored by Tony&Guy which is a weird sponsor for a heavy band, how did that come to be?Eddie, our ex singer, was a really good friend with one of their hairdresser… let’s say that it helped haha ;) Who can refuse an awesome haircut for free ?! NOT US hahaThank you for the interview I personally can’t wait for Breathe In Life to come out! Best of luck Baptiste! thank YOU so much for giving me the opportunity to speak and for supporting my bands, it means a lot to me.About the release of Breathe in Life … you can’t imagine how proud we all are of this album and we just can’t wait to release it and to have some opinions on it! we’ll have some things for every single one of you waiting for it, during this summer, including our first real music video, but i can’t speak more ;) STAY TUNED, and take care of you and people you truly love, life is short and it’s really important to cherish it ! x- Interview done by Anand BatdelgerSeriously, a down to earth guy, a big thank you to Baptiste Vigier for making the interview possible. Here all the links to the bands web pages go check them out now! go like them on Facebook and follow them on twitter!
